Athletics: Sports TeamsParticipation levels in our sports program is extraordinary. Every year approximately 70% of the students are involved on one or more teams. It is not unusual for an athlete to participate in as many as 5 sports in one year! This is unique to our school, and is special. In addition there is a core of students who participate by being score keepers, timers, managers, and performing other functions that help the athletic program. It is safe to say that athletics at ASCIS hold a special place in campus life. Our teams and individuals have developed a reputation as aggressive, hard-nosed, tough performers who go all-out, all the time. At the same time, they are known for being true sportsmen. They are always enjoyable to watch. We, ASCIS, compete in the WECSSAA (Windsor Essex County Secondary School Athletic Association) leagues. We are a ‘Single A’ school (the schools are put in leagues according to the enrollment), and generally compete against other ‘A’ schools in the team sports (basketball, volleyball, soccer). In the individual and dual sports, all of the WECSSAA schools are in the ‘same category’ regardless of size. The top teams and/or individuals in the WECSSAA leagues proceed to the SWOSSAA (Southwestern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association) which amounts to a ‘district championship’ and includes schools from Lambton and Kent counties. Success at level permits the teams and/or to participate in the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association) which is the provincial championships and includes schools from approximately 20 districts from all over the province of Ontario. In the fall, the following sports are offered:
The winter sports are:
In the spring, the sports are:
For most of the sports, practices are held daily, Monday through Friday, from 3:45 to 5:45. Swimming and golf usually have different schedules because off-campus facilities are used. All participants are expected to be a every practice. Games are, for the most part, held after school. Normally we play a home and away schedule with each of the teams, so some travel is involved. The individual and team sports are generally a ‘tournament’ type of competition. All of the sports listed above are ‘senior level’ sports. We do offer junior teams when there are enough juniors available. Basically everyone who wishes to play any sport, and is willing to make the commitment, can be accommodated – one of the big benefits of being in a ‘small school’. |
